Radon At Tahoe is certified with NEHA-NRPP (National Environmental Health Association - National Radon Proficiency Program) and with the California and Nevada Radon Programs, Certification # 104717RMT. We are independent of the radon tester or mitigator and can help home owners evaluate their radon problem, understand the possible solutions, choose a contractor, or do the work themselves.
Testing is generally the first step. But remember that you can call on us at any step in the process for an independent, certified, and trained opinion on what is your best option for your particular property or circumstance. We work on site or over the phone. Contact us for rates and to get started.

Continuous radon testers deliver more accurate readings over longer time periods than 3-day charcoal testers because radon levels vary day to day and season to season. With a continuous tester, you can test multiple rooms and multiple houses in different seasons.
Note on the alarm function of the Safety Siren: I have had one customer complain that the unit was not working correctly because it would not switch from long term readings to short term readings. I contacted the manufacturer and found out that this is part of the alarm function. Once the unit detects a long term reading of greater than 4 pCi/L, the unit locks into the long term reading. If it detects a short term reading greater than 4 pCi/L for more than 30 days it locks into the short term reading. This is a safety function to get the owner to fix the situation. The unit will release the lock when it registers a long term reading of less than 4 pCi/L. One alternative would be to reset the unit. Of course fixing the radon problem would be a good alternative also.
Note to residents of Iowa and Illinois: This unit is not for sale to residents of the State of Iowa nor for shipment to Iowa residents per Iowa Department of Public Health Rules, Chapters 43 (136B). Please contact the Iowa Department of Public Health at (515) 281-7689 for further information. And as of August 13, 2009, we can no longer ship to residents of Illinois for the same reason. All radon detection units sold in Illinois must be calibrated and certified by the Illinois Radon Office
These restriction on free trade by the Iowa and Illinois legislature requires that all radon detection devices sold in Iowa and Illinois must be certified by the state Public Health Radon Program. The problem is that the U.S. EPA no longer certifies any radon testing device and that there are no existing protocols that include the technology used in the Safety Siren3, therefore the unit is impossible to "certify." The restriction may also be the result of some radon industry bias against homeowners doing self testing vs. hiring a professional radon tester. The unit more than meets the EPA requirements for detecting radon. But to stay within the law, residents wishing to purchase this unit would have to have the unit shipped to a friend or relative across the state line. I am told that the manufacturer, Family Safety Products of Michigan is working to meet both state's requirements.
What
makes this restriction of further interest is that, according
to the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa radon survey
indicates that Iowa has the largest percentage (71.6%) of homes
above the US Environmental Protection Agency standard of 4pCi/L
than any other state. Compare this to 69% for Zephyr Cove, Nevada,
and we see that areas in the Sierra Nevada region rank up there
with the worst radon states in the country.
Protecting Your Home From Radon - A Step-By-Step Manual For Radon Reduction This great "do-it yourself" book is popular with homeowners who want to learn more about fixing their house. It is "essential" reading if you expect to do the job yourself and is very useful if you decide to bid it out to a certified radon mitigator. The detailed manual describes the most common methods for reliably reducing radon in a home. Written in a non-technical format, the book includes step-by-step instructions and illustrations to guide homeowners through the radon mitigation process. View chapter headings
